Playground Bark or Loose Impact Absorbing Surfaces (L.I.A.S)is a natural solution for playground surfacing and generally uses the bark of trees to create the correct impact attenuating properties required for safer surfacing needs.

bark

Loose Impact Absorbing Surfaces (L.I.A.S) is a natural solution for playground surfacing, but it is not suitable for wheelchair use. Loose Impact Absorbing Surfaces includes tree bark, sand and pea gravel Sand can stain clothing and is rarely used in the UK as a safer surface. When installed correctly in accordance with the suppliers’ guide lines Loose Impacting Attenuating Surfaces conforms to BSEN1177.

Bark type surfaces are available in a number of different forms each having differing properties including texture, performance (Critical Fall Height) and long term durability of the surface. The most common types available are Granular Bark usually from Pine Trees and Elastic or Supple Barks from Spruce species.

Bark is initially an inexpensive Safer Surfacing Option and gives play areas a very natural feel in the right surroundings. Bark is laid onto a membrane base to prevent plant growth and must be laid at a minimum depth of 100 mm to a recommended maximum height of 300 mm. Depending on the type and quality of the Bark Critical Fall heights of 6.01m are claimed when laid to a depth of 300 mm.

Regular maintenance and inspection is required to maintain the impact absorbing properties. Unlike rubber and synthetic surfacing options, high impact areas such as at the base of swings and slides need to be levelled and raked on a daily or weekly basis depending on the usage of the play area. Over time the bark will gradually wear down and will require topping up and turning. In fact, it is recommended that the entire surface is replaced every 4 years. Due to the active maintenance required for Bark, it is a more expensive safety surface option in the long term compared to rubber and synthetic surfaces which require less inspection and minimum maintenance.

Other considerations when considering a Loose Impact Absorbing Surface include potential animal infestation, animal faeces and rubbish including glass which may be hard to spot.

For information on the installation of Loose Impact Absorbing surfaces please refer to our Installation Guide.
