Grass Mats offer a simple but effective playground safety surface.
These rubber mats have in-built holes to allow grass to grow through. The ultimate aim is for the rubber mats be completely covered in grass to give a natural grass look to the area.
Somewhat extravagant claims are sometime made for the attenuating qualities of these mats and the consensus of informed opinion seems to be that for this product to work it should be installed on a well established grassed area that has a substantial root base.
It should be noted that grass does not always grow through the mats as it is supposed to. Additionally, mats are often trampled into the ground, when installed on ground that does not have an established growth of turf, and these will require re-laying. Also this surface is only suitable for low traffic areas. Nevertheless, given the right circumstances grass mats can provide a useful cost saving compared to other surfaces.
